CHAPTER 12

“Nah, my dad would totally beat your dad,” Duchess said airily. “My dad could beat anyone’s dad.”

“No, not my dad!” Harley said hotly. He waved a breadstick around with hot indignation. “My dad would smash a glass over your dad’s head, then your dad would fall down on the ground and hit his head and die.”

DeeDee suppressed a chuckle as she began eating her tomato and mozzarella bruschetta. It was cheering her up a little, listening to Harley and Duchess’ conversation. So far, they’d debated the merits of various fast food restaurants, and argued about pizza toppings and ice cream flavors.

Duchess had won every argument by telling him he was too young to understand, and he’d understand when he attained the ripe old age of thirteen.

“That’s not very nice to talk about her dad dying, Harley,” DeeDee said.

Duchess shrugged. “He’s just a dumb kid. I’ll let him off.” She snapped a breadstick casually and threw it in Harley’s lap, before cutting into her mushroom with garlic mozzarella and popping it into her mouth.

Harley peered at her plate. “Ewww. You’re eating slugs!”

Duchess held her fork and looked at DeeDee witheringly. “See what I mean?”

“It’s mushrooms,” DeeDee said to Harley. “Although people do eat snails, you know, which are similar to slugs. They’re called escargot.”

“I know that,” Duchess said. “I ate them with my dad and they’re actually quite nice.”

Harley mimed vomiting.

“Ugh, Harley, you’re so immature.”

“My food’s much better than yours,” Harley said. “I get more breadsticks.” He’d ordered garlic parmesan breadsticks with a dipping sauce. He dunked violently, stuffed half a breadstick into his mouth, making himself look like a chipmunk.

His mother, Trish, gave him a warning look across the table and he sunk back in his chair, a little calmer.

Duchess had been ignoring him, and evidently she’d had time to think. She looked at Harley and said, “You know, I still think my dad could beat your dad. There was this stupid girl, Caitlin, that was picking on me in school and my dad shouted at her dad, and then her dad shouted back, and then my dad punched him in the face.” She smiled proudly. “Caitlin never said anything to me after that.”

“Yeah, well, like I said, my dad could hit your dad on the head with a glass and then your dad would fall down and then your dad would bump his head and…”

“I think they’re evenly matched,” DeeDee said, trying to avoid him talking about Dougal dying again. “Your dads would never fight each other. They’re family.”

“Yeah, but someone in my family killed my grandma,” Duchess said, matter-of-factly. “Just because someone’s family doesn’t mean they’ll be nice to you.”

DeeDee had aimed her explanation at Harley. She couldn’t say Duchess was wrong.

“My dad did it before,” Harley piped up. “He smashed a man over the head and…”

“Yeah, you’ve said that bit already,” Duchess said.

“He went to prison before I was a baby, daddy told me. Maybe my dad killed Grandma Mary.”

Duchess’ eyes were wide as saucers. “Maybe he did.
